City Data Story

Explore the new ideas and technologies that make up a future city.

A Knowledge City

All around the world cities are realising that data and knowledge can be the foundation of their future. Glasgow is leading the way - uncovering new and innovative ways to collect, understand and create new insights from our city’s data.

City Data Hub

The hub brings together almost 400 data sets, painting a living and breathing picture of life in the city. It gives citizens, businesses, communities and decision-makers open access to the latest information on everything from pass rates at different driving test centres, to the location of bike racks and footfall in retail areas. data.glasgow.gov.uk

Sensors

Traffic sensors around the city are now connected to the city data hub creating a wealth of data that can be analysed. Using this insight we can better understand and improve traffic flow through the city. The new Glasgow Operations Centre can now also help emergency vehicles by controlling traffic lights where possible to create a ‘green wave’ of green crossings. Find our more here

Internet of Things

Millions of devices are starting to become part of the Internet of Things; enabled by the internet to bring a smarter experience to our homes and lives. This growth in devices and sensors will produce a wealth of new data that we can start to understand and make smart choices with!

A Smart City

Glasgow is harnessing the power of open data to make better use of our city's resources. A Smart City is a sustainable city. We're joining the dots to make our buildings, journeys and services more efficient and future proof!

Energy Efficient

The Glasgow Cycling App connects you to new cycle routes in the city created by other cyclists. By anonymously sharing these routes, city planners can make future decisions based on how people really use the city. Find out more here

Smart Lighting

New street lighting being trialled in Glasgow makes smarter use of this vital city infrastructure. Using highly efficient LEDs and motion sensitive lighting cuts down on energy usage and operation costs. A range of sensors to monitor pollution and footfall can be ‘plugged in’ to provide data on the city in real time. This data is then relayed to the City Data Hub and Operations Centre for better analysis and even safety control. Find out more here

Social Transport

Glasgow City Council has a significant requirement for a modern, efficient social transport fleet to transport children with additional support needs, adults with learning disabilities and people attending residential or day care services across the city. Demand responsive technology has improved journey planning and scheduling, driver and management information and optimisation of routes. Find out more here

A Connected City

By sharing and utilising knowledge we can start to forge new experiences and connections with our city.
